Take Your Summer Glow Into Winter
If you spent some time under the tanning bulbs this past summer, then you are probably facing a fading tan as winter approaches. Everyone wants to extend the summer bronzing phase into winter, but there is not as much natural sunlight to provide backup. Nor does it look good to display the same level of tanning during the winter season. Tanning bulbs are wonderful for what they do, but we do not want to sport an unnatural or splotchy tan during the last months of the year. Extending the glow is an easy task, provided you approach it in the right way.
First, you will want to exfoliate your skin. This can be done with simple products that you probably already own. After the exfoliation, you will need to moisturize your skin in order to deepen the tan that is remaining. Exfoliation prevents the tan itself from fading in an irregular patchwork. Finally, think about a tan extender, like an artificial spray-on or rub-on tanning solution. Consider exfoliating with either a store product, or a homemade paste, which consists of oatmeal, water, sea salt, and almond oil. About a half-cup of oatmeal and an equal amount of water will do, adding a pinch of the salt and a few drops of the almond oil. Work the cream into your skin, then rinse.
After that step is complete, hydrate your skin with a moisturizer. Moisturizing your skin as much as possible will help lock in what color you have. Again, you can make one by combining your favorite lotion with a couple drops of olive oil. While there are products out there that you can buy as a moisturizer, it is often more fun and less expensive to make your own. If you put it on your skin right after a bath, it will reach a deep level of absorption, and help repair your skin after the exfoliation you did in step one.
Finally, you should seriously consider extending your tan’s life by using a product that provides artificial coloration. This is not something you can concoct on your own. Check out what the pharmacy and beauty stores offer. Keep in mind that these products can get expensive, so stay on the low end of the price range. You do not need anything but a simple, inexpensive product to add a bit of bronzing to your skin. Go easy with the tanning lotion, erring on the side of too little. You can always add a touch more later on if you feel you need it.
Proper skin care will allow your tan to last long into the winter, so be sure you take care of your skin no matter the season. Exfoliate in the summer and winter, and always keep your skin moisturized. You’ll find that not only will your tan hold better, but that your skin will feel great too.
