Protecting yourself from the sun
Everyone loves a glowing tan, and we also know that getting a genuine tan (by that I mean through rays, not sprays) is far nicer than via the fake channels. There ensues our desire for hot beach holidays, where we can spend the time delicately building up this tan. However sometimes delicate is not the word, more like burning, dangerous over-exposure is more fitting.
We are not unaware of the dangers that can be caused through over soaking in the sun. We are continually reminded to wear sunscreen and protect ourselves. Although the sun can have a positive effect on our health and contribute to a healthier mood and attitude, it can also be incredibly dangerous.
Sun cream is there for a reason, and if we choose to ignore it, we do so at our own risk. It is there to protect and help us stay safe in the hot sun. Often we are so keen to get that holiday tan that we think oh we’ll leave off the sun cream, burn and then it’ll turn brown. What people seem to skim over is the damaging affect this has on your skin. The UV rays are harmful to our skin, and although at the time we may gain a healthy glow, in the long run it can cause all sorts of problems.
As well as burning, blisters, dehydration, and sunstroke, skin cancer is the most harmful of the lot and 1 in every 3 diagnoses of cancer is skin cancer. It can be cured, yet it can also kill if not recognised and treated early on. Skin cancer is often spotted through an abnormal mole, blemish or mark on the skin. If any changes appear to moles or the surface of your skin, then ensure you seek doctor’s advice immediately to get it checked out. Better to be safe than sorry as they say.
So the moral of the story is to slap on that sun cream. Vanity doesn’t matter if you’re facing death and so don’t let the desire for a tan overtake your safety. Avoid the sunshine at its strongest – midday and cover yourself up if you have fair skin or quite a few moles.
