How to Better Care For Your Babys Skin

New parents are often intimidated by caring for their new baby’s skin. As a new parent it is easy to become overwhelmed with trying to be perfect. Baby skin care is often little more than common sense which should be good news. Clean and clear baby skin does not depend on expensive or complicated skin care routines. In fact, you don’t need many products at all! Here are some helpful hints for new parents to use as they develop their baby’s skin care routine.

Obviously you want to make sure that every part of your baby’s skin that is not covered with clothing gets sunscreen applied to it–including his face and ears. Before going outdoors give your baby some added protection by dabbing some zinc oxide onto his (or her) ears and face. Remember: whenever you take your baby outside into a sunny day, he or she needs to wear a hat! You can never be too cautious!

Don’t use regular detergent on your baby’s clothing–use something that is gentler. Detergent meant for adult clothing is harsher than that meant for baby clothing. Laundry soap used on adult clothing often leaves behind a residue that will cause irritation–and roughen up the baby’s clothing in the process. To avoid laundry induced skin issues use a gentle soap–it will keep your baby’s clothes soft and rarely leaves behind any residue.

You don’t need to use very much soap at all to keep your baby’s skin clean. All you need are a few drops of soap to totally clean your baby. Using more than those few drops will dry out the baby’s skin and make him vulnerable to a host of skin irritations. Don’t ever apply the soap directly to your baby’s skin. Use a washcloth to work up a lather from the soap which you will use to clean your baby before you rinse him off. Don’t try to lather up your baby’s whole body too early–get used to the process by washing one part of your baby’s body at a time. Handling a baby that is slicked with soap can be very intimidating!

You will also want to take extra precaution against the sun with hats and umbrellas. A cool, damp and soft cloth can be used to treat a sunburn that still manages to develop.

There are all sorts of ways to practice proper baby skin care. It is vital that you remember that caring for your baby’s skin involves more than just regular bathing. Making sure that you use the correct laundry detergent, using sunscreen and letting your baby get some “naked time” every day are all important parts of proper baby skin care. Caring for and protecting your baby’s skin should be second nature before too long. Before you know it, it will be a habit!
