Helpful Hints for Your Baby Skin Care Routine

There is more to baby skin care than most parents realize. Proper infant skin care means caring for all of a baby’s skin (aka the whole body). Skin conditions happen more often in newborns because newborn skin is not yet used to dealing with environmental factors that exist outside of a mother’s womb. Practicing proper baby skin care means making smart choices throughout the day. Pretty much everything your baby has contact with during the day will have an effect on your baby’s skin. Don’t worry though: practicing proper skin care for your baby does not have to be difficult or complicated. It can be very easy if you know how to use your common sense. Here are some tips to help you out as you get used to the new routine.

Your baby’s bath can be short; it does not have to be long. Believe it or not if your newborn’s bath time lasts too long it can be harmful for your baby! Your baby’s bath time shouldn’t last longer than five minutes–all you need to do is get her wet, soap her up and rinse her off. Once you have rinsed off your baby, rub some light (baby) lotion or moisturizer into his skin and then towel him dry. Take care to dry your baby completely or the left over moisture could lead to rashes or yeast infections. After all, newborn’s skin has lots of little folds and ripples that moisture can hide in. Make sure that the towel you use is soft!

Acne isn’t only for teenagers, babies get it too. What happens is that while the mother is still pregnant – the baby is exposed to the mother’s hormones. Oil production in the baby’s skin is caused by the mother’s hormones, the oil gets trapped in the pores and lead to infection. Never use adult acne treatments on a baby! They are much too harsh and can burn your baby’s skin. Instead keep the baby’s face clean through regular bathing and the acne will clear up on its own in a few weeks.

There are lots of ways to protect your baby’s skin and to make sure it stays clean and healthy. Good skin care habits develop everything so make sure you develop a skin care routine early on in your child’s life.

Remember, proper baby skin care involves taking care of the baby’s whole body, not just her (or his) face.
